Student Code of Conduct

  1. Respect & Safety

Treat everyone with courtesy and respect; harassment, discrimination, bullying, threats, or sexual misconduct are strictly prohibited. (This includes online/DM communications related to the event.)

  2. Follow adult directions

Follow instructions from event staff, volunteers, and hotel personnel. If you disagree with a direction, request a private conversation with event staff.

  3. No alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or vaping

No possession/use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or nicotine/vaping products during the event or at the hotel. Violation = immediate removal. (This aligns with typical student-activity codes such as MSHSL expectations of responsible behavior.) mshsl.org

  4. Respect property

Respect hotel, school, and personal property. Vandalism/theft will result in disciplinary action and potential criminal reporting.

  5. Rooming & privacy

Teens must stay in assigned rooms and with assigned roommates. Under no circumstances should any adult be alone in a teen’s hotel room. One-on-one meetings between adults and minors must be in public or in view of other staff (see chaperone rules).

  6. Curfew & movements

Observe event curfew and sign-in/out procedures for leaving event/hotel for any reason.

  7. Technology

Do not record others without consent. Respect photo/video expectations communicated by event staff.

  8. Medical & emergency

Provide accurate medical information during registration and follow staff guidance in medical or safety situations.

  9. Consequences

Violations will be handled per the Infractions Policy below (possible warnings, parent/guardian notification, removal from event, and law enforcement/child-protection reporting if required).

Infractions Policy

Use a three-tier approach: (A) Minor, (B) Serious, (C) Safety/Legal violations.

A. Minor violations (examples: lateness, mild disrespect, first offense of minor tech misuse)

Response

  1. Verbal warning (documented).

  2. Reset expectation with the participant; notify parent/guardian at staff discretion.

  3. Repeated minor violations → written warning and possible removal from select activities.

B. Serious violations (examples: bullying that causes harm, physical fighting, theft, property damage, possession of tobacco/vape, underage drinking, persistent rulebreaking)

Response

  1. Immediate removal from unsupervised activities; parent/guardian notified and must pick up participant or authorize supervised travel home.

  2. Investigation by Event Safety Lead (collect statements from involved parties, witnesses; preserve evidence).

  3. Possible removal from remainder of event; restitution for damage; referral to school administration and/or law enforcement as appropriate.

C. Safety/Legal violations (examples: suspected child abuse, sexual assault, severe physical harm, credible threats)

Response

  1. Immediate safety measures — separate involved parties, ensure victim safety, provide medical care if needed.

  2. Notify law enforcement and child protection as required by Minnesota law; Safety Lead will make the mandated report (or ensure the mandated reporter does). Document time, persons notified, and steps taken. Failure by a mandated reporter to notify may be a misdemeanor under MN law. MN Revisor's Office

  3. Suspend involved adult(s) from duties immediately pending investigation; remove involved student(s) from programming pending guardian/contact and investigation.

  4. Cooperate with investigators and notify appropriate partner school/district officials.
